Last week we focused the blog on moving out of your existing home, but this week it's time to move in! Congratulations on your new home! Moving into a new place can be both exciting and overwhelming. To ensure a seamless transition, we've compiled a comprehensive list that covers everything you need to do when moving into a new home. From essential tasks to unique ideas and handy products, we'll guide you through the process, simplifying your move-in experience.
Inspect for any damages: Before unpacking, thoroughly inspect the property for any pre-existing damages or issues. Take photos and notify your realtor or landlord to avoid liability.
Unpack essentials box first: As we noted in the last blog, you should have a separate box (or boxes) labeled 'unpack 1st' with essentials like toiletries, bedding, and a few kitchen items. This way, you'll have immediate access to necessities without searching through numerous boxes. Unpack these boxes first to make your life easier in your first hours and days in your new home.
Strategically unpack the rest of your boxes: The kitchen is the heart of the home, and you may want to start with those boxes after you've unpacked your 'unpack 1st' boxes. Getting takeout food can get tiring after several days and you'll want to get back to cooking healthy meals as quickly as possible. After that, bedrooms and bathrooms are next in priority.
Re-assemble items: When packing for the move, you had many items that needed to be disassembled (think TV and various components for one). For items that require set-up, reference photos or videos you took prior to disassembling before the move. Those pictures and/or videos will save you hours and frustration!
Hire a professional: Consider hiring a professional organizer to help you unpack and get organized. Not only do we unpack, but we also provide ideas and products that will get you organized with the goal of staying organized in your new home. It can be stressful to move, let us take some of that stress away!
Projects list: Make a projects list of various projects you'd like to do in your new home. As you unpack each room, add any projects you think of to your list. When time permits, you'll know which projects to tackle.
Consider changing the locks: Prioritize your safety by changing the locks on all exterior doors. Consider installing a smart lock for added convenience and security.
Deep clean: Before moving your belongings in, give your new home a thorough cleaning. Wipe down surfaces, vacuum carpets, and mop floors for a fresh start.
Set up utilities: As noted last week, this should have been done prior to the move, but just as a reminder, contact utility companies to establish services such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and cable. Schedule the installation for your move-in day.
Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms: Ensure these crucial safety devices are present and in working condition!
Change your address: Notify the post office, banks, subscriptions, and important contacts of your address change. Update your driver's license and vehicle registration, too.
Update your insurance: Update your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy to reflect the new address and coverage requirements.
Locate emergency exits: Familiarize yourself with emergency exits, fire extinguisher locations, and other safety features in your new residence. Create an evacuation plan and share this information with your household members. If you don't have any fire extinguishers, please put them on your 'to buy' list. For second floors, invest in a safety ladder. Hopefully you'll never need either, but you should have these items to avoid disaster!

Measure rooms and spaces: Take accurate measurements of each room to plan furniture placement. This will save time and effort during the move-in process. Keep these measurements in a digital note-taking app so you can access on your phone when shopping!
Create a floor plan: Design a layout for your furniture based on the measurements taken earlier. This will help you visualize the placement and avoid unnecessary rearranging later.
Install window treatments: Ensure privacy and light control by installing curtains, blinds, or shades. Make sure to measure your windows and record the measurements on your note-taking app so you'll have them handy when shopping. There are a wide range of affordable options to suit your style.
Test electrical outlets: Verify that all electrical outlets are functioning correctly. Consider utilizing surge protectors to safeguard your electronic devices. Did you know that the higher the number of joules, the greater protection for your electronics? Additionally, you can have an electrician install a whole house surge protector, ask yours for a quote!

Test plumbing fixtures: Ensure that faucets, toilets, and showers are in good working order. Fix any leaks or plumbing issues promptly to avoid any larger issues.
Stock up on basic supplies: Make a list of essential supplies such as cleaning products, toiletries, light bulbs, and batteries.
Explore your neighborhood: Take a stroll around your new neighborhood to familiarize yourself with nearby amenities, parks, shops, and restaurants.
Register with local services: Sign up for local services like waste management, recycling, and community programs and schools (if you have children).
Introduce yourself to neighbors: Break the ice by introducing yourself to your new neighbors. Building a friendly rapport can create a sense of community. Consider joining local groups on apps like Facebook and/or Nextdoor to meet and get information from others in the area.
Join local groups or clubs: Get involved in the community by joining local groups or clubs that align with your interests. It's a great way to meet new people and engage in activities.
Set up a home office: If you work remotely, designate a specific area as your home office. Invest in ergonomic furniture and accessories for a comfortable workspace.
Sit-stand desks are a great option and not as expensive as you may think! There are many options at Amazon.
Create a maintenance schedule: Regularly maintain your new residence by creating a schedule for tasks like cleaning gutters, changing air filters, servicing appliances, and changing smoke detector batteries etc.
Pet and child proof your new home: If you have pets or children, ensure their safety in your new residence. Install gates, secure toxic substances, and create a comfortable space for them.
Establish a document organization system: Set up a filing system for important documents, warranties, and receipts. Consider using digital storage solutions or labeled folders for easy access.
Decorate and personalize: Add personal touches to your new home by hanging artwork, displaying photographs, or incorporating plants to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Celebrate your new home: Finally, take a moment to celebrate and enjoy your new residence. Host a housewarming party or invite friends and family over to share this milestone with you.
Moving into a new home can be an exciting and transformative experience. By following this comprehensive list, you'll be well-prepared to settle into your new home smoothly. Embrace this new chapter of your life and make your new residence a place where memories are made, and dreams come true!
