Moving can be an exciting and transformative experience, but it often comes hand-in-hand with stress and chaos. From packing up your belongings to coordinating logistics, there's a multitude of tasks to handle before settling into your new home. However, with proper organization and planning, you can streamline the process and make your move a breeze! We've put together an essential moving checklist to help you stay organized and alleviate the overwhelm. Let's dive into the essential steps to get organized and make your relocation a success!
Start as early as possible – this can’t be emphasized enough!
Set a moving date and create a timeline with deadlines.
Create a budget for your move, including costs for moving services, packing materials, and transportation.
If you decide to hire professionals, research reputable moving companies in your area. Obtain quotes, compare services, and book a reliable company well in advance. Reserve a moving truck if DIY moving.
Declutter your belongings and organize items to keep, sell, donate, or discard. Make your decisions to keep or discard items BEFORE the move so you are not moving items into your new home that are not needed.
Notify the following (including but not limited to):
Utility providers – arrange for disconnection at existing home and connection at your new home
Internet provider
Post office – complete change of address form
Banks
Insurance providers
DMV
Voter registration
Subscriptions
Employer
Family and friends
Landlord (if applicable)
Schools
Medical providers
Obtain necessary permits or parking arrangements for moving trucks at both your current and new locations.
Plan for childcare or pet care on moving day, if necessary.
Confirm all arrangements and double-check your checklist before the moving day.
Make a detailed inventory of your belongings, particularly valuable or fragile items. This will help you keep track during the packing and unpacking process.
Acquire essential packing supplies such as boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, markers, and labels. Some of these items may be provided by your moving service but needed for a DIY move.
Take pictures and/or videos of items you have to disassemble for the move prior to disassembly. Make sure to put screws/bolts etc in a plastic bag and attach them to the item. This will save you hours of re-assembly time when moving in.
Start packing non-essential items early, labeling boxes clearly. Below are some packing tips:
Use a different color label for each room – make a note of the color used for each room – label top and sides of boxes so they can be viewed from many angles. You can purchase color and room coded labels like the ones below.

Create a map of your new home outlining each room and color code for each room. Provide this to the movers.
Keep track of the number of boxes you have for each room.
Pack an ‘unpack 1st box’ (or boxes) for those essentials you need access to for your first few days in your new home. You can have an 'unpack 1st box' for several rooms in your home such as your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.
Bed linens
Towels
Medications
Toiletries
Couple of changes of clothes for each family member as well as Pj’s
Laptops, phones, chargers
Essential documents
